About Acupuncture

Some people come for acupuncture for specific conditions such as osteoarthritis of the knee or nausea during pregnancy.  Others choose to have treatment to maintain good health.  Traditional Chinese Acupuncture aims to treat the whole person and not just their symptoms, therefore no two peope and their treatment plans will be the same.  If you are unsure if acupuncture can help your condition, please contact Ruth and she will be happy to discuss your situation with you.

Acupuncture works by inserting very fine needles into acupuncture points on the body.  The points are located from the top of the head to the sole of the foot, along pathways called medidians. There are about 360 different points but the main ones used are below the elbows and knees.  The needles stimualte "qi" or vital energy, which over time can become stuck or out of balance.  The aim of the treatment is to bring your body back into harmony.  The needles are usually left in the body for about 20 minutes and patients often say how relaxed they feel during and after treatment.

The first appointment will take about 11/2 hours.  Ruth will initially ask questions  about your symptoms, lifestyle and general physical and emotional health.  This will enable her to choose points suitable for you and she will then complete an acupuncture treatment.
